The Name "Coral Gables"

It is often asked where does the name Coral Gables come from? We know that George Merrick's childhood home on Coral Way was named Coral Gables. The house was built in 1910 from coral rock mined from what later became The Venetian Pool. The house has numerous gable styled roofs.
But why did the Merrick choose Coral Gables? The answer lies in a home named "Gray Gables"
in the town of Bourne, MA on Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod.
Gray Gables was the name of the summer White House for President Grover Cleveland. The
Merrick's lived not so far from Gray Gables and President Cleveland was much admired in the
1890's.
Coincidentally, both the Merrick's and the Cleveland's lost a daughter named Ruth. The death of
George's sister Ruth (who was a twin) was the primary impetus for Solomon Merrick to move to
Miami. He could not bear the thought of losing another child during another fierce winter in
Massachusetts.
