- A Charming Brick for your Old Spanish Home

Old Chicago Brick is type of paver that works harmoniously and adds character to Old Spanish homes.
The bricks are both old and do come from Chicago. They are generally more than 100 years old and have been repurposed/ recycled from buildings and warehouses that have been torn down. The bricks match well in color, texture and patina to the historic Cuban barrel roof tiles most
commonly found on the Mediterranean Revival homes in Coral Gables. Below is an example of the installation of a Herringbone pattern laid over more than a foot of leveled sub-base, crushed limestone and sand.

Driveways, walkways and patios are the most common areas to find Old Chicago Bricks. There are several brickyards that carry these special bricks between Miami and West Palm Beach. They are 2 to 3 times the price of common bricks and more difficult to install. Some of the better yards will allow you to select your own pallets. I had the opportunity to mix 3 pallets of Old Milwaukee bricks which are cream or yellow with 8 pallets of the terra-cotta color Old Chicago.

The bricks are famously stamped with the name of the brick company. "Chicago Brick Co." and "Illinois Brick Co." are examples. The diamond symbol indicates Union Made. Coral Gables, South Florida and Southern California are ideal locations for Old Chicago Bricks because of the Mediteranean architecture and warm climate. Where there is snow and a need for plows these bricks do not do well. They break and chip. Moreover, they do not blend with the architecture.

Coral Gables requires a permit and review by the Board of Architects. Professional installation is necessary. The beauty of the bricks is only surpassed by the history that is in each brick. There is an artistic symmetry that is created when the driveway, walkway and roof are all in a terra-cotta old world finish. A rich addition to your Old Spanish Castle.
