Hugh Wilson Sonnet

Born in Miami during World War II,

Coral Gables grad, Palermo Avenue.

Hugh Wilson, had a flair for words and humor.

Considered an industry late bloomer.

 

After ad career, Wilson got his start,

Thanks to luck, Grant Tinker and Bob Newhart.

Pitched idea for “WKRP” show,

Tinker said yes, program about radio.

 

Directed Midler, Hawn, Cage and McLain,

“Police Academy”, “First Wives Club” still entertain.

An Emmy earned for “Frank’s Place” with Tim Reid,

Awarded for Outstanding Writing, indeed.

 

Hugh excelled in his writing craft, marriage and fatherhood,

A kid from Coral Gables who wrote his way to Hollywood.
