Richard Welch

Dr. Roy Talcott Sonnet
Roy’s home, a few Green Line stops from Fenway,
At Brookline High School, baseball he would play.
A star pitcher for Princeton, Talcott soared,
Forty Five wins, still an all-time record.
The year was 1943 for Roy’s dream,
Talcott earned a spot on the Boston Brave’s team.
To play ball in Beantown, legendary stuff,
Two outs in, Roy tore his rotator cuff.
One of the shortest Major League careers,
Baseball ended. Off to war, no time for tears.
Duke Medical, and long time Miami Doctor,
Serving others, the most critical factor.
Like “Doc Graham”, Dr. Talcott realized two dreams,
Baseball and Medicine, unlikely extremes.
