Colonel Welch, Sitting Bull and Dr. Welch

Sonnet

Sitting Bull
Colonel A.B. Welch

Researching American Indian Chiefs,
Looking for a fearless leader with brave beliefs.
I write of Sitting Bull of the Lakota Sioux,
And his relation to not one Welch, but two.

A prolific writer of Indian lore,
Colonel Welch’s papers, hard to ignore.
Before World War I and with much celebration,
First white man, adopted by the Sioux Nation.

James Welch came from Irish and Indian descent,
Blackfoot author with talent to document.
Writing “Killing Custer” from Indian view,
Telling the story of Sitting Bull and the Sioux.

Two white Welch writers who made their pens dance,
Both Indians spreading truth and tolerance.
